  • EFMI

The idea for the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) emerged during a meeting organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe. The meeting took place in Copenhagen in September 1976. Representatives from ten national medical informatics societies signed a declaration of intent stating: "The Federation will be established as a non-profit organization dedicated to the theory and practical application, within the European context, of Information Science and Technology in the medical field and medical sciences. The ten representatives present today declare their establishment as the Provisional Council of the Federation, which is constituted by law." Copenhagen, September 11, 1976.

  • IMIA

The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) is an independent organization established in 1989 under Swiss legislative law. The organization actually began to exist in 1967 as Technology Committee No. 4 of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). In 1979, it separated from a special interest group within IFIP and became what it is today, an independent organization. IMIA has maintained its relationship with IFIP, being an affiliated organization of IFIP.
